Each September, National Suicide Prevention Week strives to increase awareness about suicide and how to prevent it. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and affects men and women of all ages, including teenagers. Here are 3 important things to know about suicide.
- Having thoughts of suicide is more common that you may think. “According to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, over 9 million people reported having suicidal thoughts in 2013,” said Amanda Johnson, PhD, Clinical Director for Capstone Behavioral Health Care in Newton. “If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, you’re definitely not alone, but it’s imperative that you reach out for help.”
- Many of the situations or reasons that lead people to consider suicide are things that can be changed or addressed; however, ending one’s life is something that can’t be changed. “There are many resources and other methods of assistance that are available to anyone considering suicide,” explained Johnson. “At Capstone Behavioral Health Care, therapists are available to help patients address the issues that are contributing to the reasons they’re considering ending their lives.”
- Talking about suicide doesn’t make someone commit suicide. “The situation is often the opposite,” said Johnson. “Removing the stigma of suicide, and giving someone a place to safely talk about their thoughts and feelings about suicide, can be very helpful in preventing the worst from happening.”
Anyone considering suicide should call 911 for help. If someone you know has said or done something to make you believe they’re contemplating taking their own life, call 911. “We also urge anyone in either of those situations to call our office at any time,” added Johnson. “After hours, calls are directed to a crisis center that is staffed 24 hours a day. Another option is to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.” For more information, please contact:
