Safety tips for showing your home...be prepared

SPONSORED

When selling a home, most people are consumed with repairs, curb appeal and making a good impression to get the highest price.

A very important aspect of selling, however, is safety when showing your home.

Discuss it in advance with your realtor, who has experience along those lines and can give you productive advice. You need to find out if the realtor will use a lock box on your door and who will be using it.

Likewise, if you have any valuables either lock them up or remove them from the house. These can include keys, money, jewelry, credit cards, firearms, furs or  high-end antiques and artworks. Hide mail, bills, and other documentation that may have your personal information and account numbers on them, to deter identity thieves. Security cameras also provide a measure of safety.

Don’t allow anyone inside who does not have an appointment, including drop-in viewers. However, as much as you want to sell, it’s better to err on the side of caution and gracefully decline, suggesting that they make an appointment with your realtor.

Finally, remove personal items such as family photos, especially if you have children. The purpose is twofold. There’s the idea that potential buyers can’t imagine themselves in a home that is full of someone else’s photos. Unfortunately, the other reason is that there are criminals who check real estate sites for photos that might include people. You don’t want your family members to be endangered.
