Newton boys take 11th at Saydel track meet

SAYDEL — Newton High’s Cardinal boys braved the cold, windy weather conditions just like 13 other track teams Thursday at the 2019 Saydel Eagles Boys Invitational.

The Cardinals scored 20 points to finish 11th in the 14-team field. Des Moines East edged out Madrid for the team title — 123.5 points to 122 points.

Newton had 12 top-10 performances on the chilly night of track and field action.

The Cardinal sprint medley relay team of Christian Lampman, Dakota Adams, Mason Lee and Camden Winther turned in the top finish for Newton. The foursome placed fourth in 1 minus, 41.84 seconds.

Brennan Amos and Treycen Garton ran fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race. Amos’ time was 5:04.85 and Garton crossed the line in 5:05.12. Adam Hunter tied for ninth in the 400 in 56.98 seconds.

Jackson Mace placed sixth in the 3,200 in 11:09.95 while Nate Zemene tied for 10th in 11:41.84. Amos, Hunter and Garton combined with Emmanuel Roy for a seventh-place time of 9:05.14 in the 4x800 relay.

MaKenna Davis had a leap of 18 feet, 4 3/4 inches to claim seventh in the long jump. In the discus, Lee took ninth in 124-5.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Dylan Farver, John Neal, Cole Swank and Gage Gomez was eighth in 1:09.99. Gomez took ninth in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.89 and Neal was 10th in the 110 hurdles in 18.83 seconds.

The Cardinal boys are slated to compete at Norwalk next. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Then they finally get to compete at home on Thursday in the Cardinal Invitational, a coed meet, starting at 4:30 p.m. at Newton’s H.A. Lynn Stadium.
