Newton boys take 3 matches against Grinnell

GRINNELL — Newton High’s Trent Hamand and Blake Sevenbergen put together a strong performance at No. 2 doubles for the Cardinal boys’ tennis team on Tuesday. The pair claimed one of three wins on the courts for the Cardinals.

Hamand and Sevenbergen had to work a little overtime to beat host Grinnell’s Eli Ivanov and Adam Brennan 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Newton had another third-set tiebreaker to win at No. 4 doubles as Thomas Hodnett and John Valtman defeated Grinnell’s Dallas DeNeve and Sam Wiley 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

Grinnell’s Tigers won the Little Hawkeye Conference dual 8-3. The Cardinals’ Blake Baumgartner netted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Noah Rees.

At No. 1 singles, Newton’s Brady Eberline lost 6-0, 6-2 to Lewis Jolly. Grinnell’s A.J. Wilkins defeated Newton’s Colin Hemann 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

In the No. 3 singles match, Sevenbergen lost 6-2, 7-5 to the Tigers’ Ivanov. Hamand dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 decision at No. 4 singles. Nicholas Tremel lost 6-1, 6-2 to Grinnell’s Josiah Bailey at No 5 singles.

Eberline and Hemann lost 6-0, 7-6 (5) to Jolly and Wilkins at No. 1 singles. Tremel and Baumgartner lost 6-4, 6-3 to Bailey and Rees at No. 3 doubles.

Newton’s Cutter Benac and Devon Hobbs lost 6-2, 6-2 to Grinnell’s Lane Thompson and Adam McFee at No. 5 doubles.

Newton (1-3) is 0-1 in LHC action. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Pella in a LHC dual.
