Kellogg Garden Club
The Kellogg Garden Club has enjoyed presentations and tours recently. Members toured the flower gardens of member, Laura Hanawalt. She has developed striking flower beds in a short time. Following that tour members were guests of the Baxter Garden Club at the Newton Arboretum for a special presentation by John Krzton-Pressen, Iowa State University Extension Horticulture and Local Foods Program Coordinator. He spoke on successfully growing raspberries and strawberries in Iowa. Mr. Krzton-Pressen covered pruning raspberries and maintaining a strawberry bed.
Later in the month the Baxter club joined the Kellogg club for a tour of Chuck Jackson’s local orchard. He grows cherries, peaches, pears and apples. The groups learned how to stem graft apples and enjoyed tasting several pear and apple varieties.
Chapter K-EN TTT
Chapter K-EN T.T.T. held a meeting in the home of Val McKee Oct. 9. The evening began with refreshments and news from a visitor of another chapter. She has recently moved to Newton and has been invited to join the group.
Marsha Berndt called the meeting to order. Roll was taken, minutes and treasurer reports were given. It was reported all supplies for the cheese balls have been ordered or purchased and members are ready to make them at the next meeting. Orders can be made with any member for $7 each. These will be ready for delivery Nov. 14.
The camp committee shared some possible changes to the camper preparation for next year. The group will make decisions on those changes closer to the time. Plans are being made to create the new year books. A letter was shared that was sent to the group’s two new honorary members. Members are pleased to move them to that status and continue to enjoy their membership in our group in that capacity.
It was moved and seconded to send local giving to the United Way and Neighbors Helping Neighbors for this year. The meeting was adjourned.
