Newton Police

Department

• A white 2015 Ford TCN was stopped heading east bound in the 3100 block of First Avenue East while waiting for a vehicle to turn while a white semi truck was traveling nearby. The truck did not see the TCN after looking and as a result, struck the TCN from behind, causing heavy damage to the back of the TCN at 10 a.m. Sept. 25. The truck had minor damage to its front bumper. The driver of the TCN, Kirk H. Irwin, 58, of Bondurant, said the back of his left arm, left shoulder blade and lower back all hurt, but declined an ambulance in favor of getting his injuries looked at on his own. The driver of the truck, Jacob D. Jessen, 33, of Battle Creek, was cited for following the vehicle too closely.

• Travis W. Howerton, 34, of Des Moines, was charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness at 6:43 p.m. Sept. 28. Officers were sent the 500 block of First Street South on a call of assault. Upon arrival, the victim told officers she was allegedly choked and punched in the upper lip by Howerton, resulting in swelling to the upper lip and redness around the victim’s neck. A witness had to pull Howerton off of the victim. Howerton was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
