OTTUMWA — Newton High’s Cardinal boys had their tennis season come to an end on Monday. The Cardinals lost 5-0 to host Ottumwa in a Class 2A preliminary substate dual.

The format is six singles matches and three doubles matches. Matches halt once a team has won five matches, winning the substate dual and advancing to a 2A substate semifinal dual on Saturday at Cedar Rapids.

The Bulldogs won five of six singles matches to claim the victory. No doubles matches were contested.

It was a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 win by Austin Merrill over Newton senior Grant Hamand at No. 3 singles which gave the win to the Bulldogs. Junior Collin Hemann and Ottumwa’s Christian Howard also were in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles but did not finish.

“There were a lot of tough matches versus an experienced team,” Newton coach John Bieber said. “I’m very proud of how the team played at districts as well as today and we put up a fight to keep going. My returners are already excited to get back to the practice courts for next year and my seniors are finishing on a strong note.”

Ottumwa’s Caleb Vasconez beat Newton junior Brady Eberline 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. In the No. 4 singles match, Newton senior Devon Van Brogen lost 6-3, 6-3 to Bron Bjerke.

Ottumwa’s Nick McElroy netted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Newton senior Rhandyn Oldfield at No. 5 singles. Newton senior Chad Nolin dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Joey Mitchell at No. 6 singles.
