KNOXVILLE — Newton Trap Team’s squad of Brooke Gifford, Daniel Townsend, Brodee Vest, Jarrett Antle and Ryan Brown finished 10th out of 22 varsity squads in Saturday’s trap shoot hosted by Knoxville.

There were 11 high school club teams competing in the event.

The Newton team combined to hit 201 of 250 clay pigeon targets for 10th place.

Stuart Cook shot the best score for Newton in the boys’ varsity division, breaking 46 of 50 targets to finish 15th out of 109 shooters. Malarie Zach was Newton’s top female varsity shooter with a score of 41 to take eighth out of 26 shooters.

Teams from Newton, Prairie City-Monroe, Southeast Warren, Montezuma, Indianola, Pella Christian, Knoxville, Centerville, Sigourney, Pella and Twin Cedars competed.

“There were some really impressive scores Saturday,” Newton head coach Paul Klein said. “Especially just two weeks into the competition season and with the weather we had.”

In the junior varsity division, Newton team members Lane Arrowood, Tucker Wade, Dryden Dekoning, John Sexton and Henry Jensen shot a combined score of 187 out of 250 and finished ninth. Arrowood shot a 43, taking 11th out of 87 in boys’ junior varsity division.
