URBANDALE — Newton High’s girls had a good bounce-back game on Thursday night.

After losing in a battle of Class 2A-ranked teams on their home pitch on Tuesday, the Class 2A 12th-ranked Cardinals went on the road against another ranked team. The Cardinals handed Class 1A 13th-ranked Des Moines Christian its first loss with a 2-1 road win.

“We played liked a different team compared to Tuesday,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said. “We were able to control the pace of the game.”

Newton got goals from junior Peyton Maher and sophomore Kameron Nehring in the first half. Nehring rang up her team-high fourth goal of the season. Maher has two goals on the season.

“Our passing improved immensely and we were able to get more shots on goal,” Lamont said. “Our goal is to play simple, when we do that, we succeed at getting the ball in the back of the net and Thursday night we did that and did it well.”

In their 2-1 loss to Dallas Center-Grimes on Tuesday, senior goalkeeper Addy Blom was credited with 12 saves and junior Rachel Rhoads had a goal assist.

The Cardinals (2-1) host their annual tournament on Saturday. Newton plays Des Moines Lincoln at 10 a.m. to open the event at H.A. Lynn Stadium followed by Prairie City-Monroe playing Perry at 11:30 a.m.

The consolation game is at 1 p.m. The championship game is at 2:30 p.m.
