Cardinals’ Eide claims seventh in 60-m hurdles at ISU

AMES — Newton High senior Morgann Eide was one of eight competitors to run the 60-meter hurdles in less than 10 seconds in Monday’s 24th Iowa State Girls High School Classic.

The annual high school girls’ indoor track meet is hosted by Iowa State University in Ames.

Eide captured seventh place in 9.96 seconds. Fellow classmate Liz McVey was 24th at 10.44 seconds in the field of 127 runners.

Ames senior Isabel Ingram, who was seventh at the 2017 Iowa outdoor state track meet in the 4A 100 hurdles, ran away from the field, winning in 9.08. Waukee junior Anna Kelinger was second in 9.61 seconds.

Newton senior Rachel Berkland turned in an eighth-place finish in the 800. She ran the race in 2 minutes, 26.48 seconds.

Senior Original Tesfay placed 120th in 3:14.95 in the field of 126 runners.

In the 60-meter dash, Newton senior Abbey Kirby finished 99th in a field of 146 runners in 9.228 seconds. Junior Alivia Hoffman was 136th in 9.92 seconds.

Senior Miranda Ervin was the lone field event competitor for Newton at the meet. Ervin tied for 43rd in a shot put field of 112 throwers. She threw 30 feet, 10 3/4 inches.

Newton’s 800 sprint medley relay team of senior Jordan Banfield, and freshmen Kate Callaghan, Meg Callaghan and Ashay Malow finished 41st in 2:07.03.

Juniors Clare Muckler and Gerima Blair ran the 1,500. Muckler was 39th in 5:51.22 and Blair placed 63rd in 6:06.26.

Newton will compete in Colfax-Mingo’s indoor meet on March 22 at Grinnell College.
