SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawk girls waited a couple nights more than scheduled but they opened Class 1A Region 3 playoffs with a resounding 65-29 win over HLV.
The opening-round game was slated for Thursday in Sully. It was postponed because of winter weather to Saturday and the Hawks took care of business.
Lynnville-Sully (16-6) hosts Collins-Maxwell (18-4) for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Sully. Collins-Maxwell’s Spartans beat Ankeny Christian, 59-24, on Thursday.
The Hawks bolted to a 24-6 first-quarter lead over fellow South Iowa Cedar League member HLV on Saturday. They were up 40-17 at halftime, extending the advantage to 56-24 at the end of three quarters.
“It was a good team win. I was very pleased with our defensive rotations,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We did a good job of seeing the ball and the girl, and dropping to the level. Our offense was pretty sharp when we snapped the ball which let us attack the rim. I thought we ran the floor well and made the extra pass for an easy basket.”
Lynnville-Sully put the game away at the free-throw line, cashing in on 23-of-39 attempts. The Hawks shot 32 percent, 19-of-58, from the field.
The Warrior girls were limited to 27-percent shooting, 10-of 37, from the floor. They were 7-of-16 at the line. They committed 31 turnovers and the Hawks scored 22 points off those miscues. Lynnville-Sully had a 55-26 rebounding edge.
Junior Carson Fisk poured in 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals to pace the Hawks. Senior Jataya Meyer added 11 points and sophomore Mallory Loftus had 10 points.
Senior Camryn Russell dished out three assists. Senior Mariah Vos cleared 10 rebounds and junior Shiloh Cunningham made four steals.
The top scorer for HLV was Kayla Jack with nine points.
