In response to “Iowa has a water quality crisis.” (Jan. 22) John Lichty is puzzled why Sen. Ken Rozenboom wouldn’t promise to hold a hearing on his bill, but the answer seems to be pretty obvious: He recognized the harm the legislation would do to Iowa. Lichty and his group, Iowa CCI, want a moratorium on large-scale farms across the entire state. Given that agriculture is Iowa’s top industry, such a law would have harmful consequences for the economy and farmers.
Sen. Rozenboom may also have recognized Iowa CCI’s reputation for extreme tactics. The group has protested outside of people’s personal homes and has endorsed illegal activity during demonstrations. That’s not a group that deserves a seat at the table, and it’s refreshing that a state senator wouldn’t kowtow to a group with unrealistic demands.
