Just when temperatures were beginning to warm up, Jasper County residents woke up to a winter storm Thursday morning featuring snow and ice.

Slick roads prompted all school districts in the county to close as less than an inch of snow covered roads. The main concern was the freezing rain and icy conditions that brought a negative wind chill.

The Newton Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a semi accident at 11:48 a.m. on Interstate 80. Local law enforcement said there were no injuries to report.

Patchy blowing snow didn’t help drivers during the afternoon commute. The winter storm warning expired at 6 p.m. Thursday. The temperature Friday will have a high near 10 with wind chill values as low as -20, according to the National Weather Service.
