Beekeeping Basics Class in Newton

The ISU Extension in Newton will offer a two-hour “Beekeeping Basics” course designed to introduce the fundamentals of beekeeping and to help attendees decide if this hobby is right for them. The instructor, ISU Agriculture Specialist Zack Koopman, is an experienced beekeeper and manages multiple swarms of honeybees on ISU’s research farms.

Beekeeping has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years as more people purchase hives for their homes and farms. Honeybee hive can now be found in major urban areas and schools as the educational value and accessibility of beekeeping is realized by people of all ages. “Bees are one of the most incredible creatures on the planet. The more you learn about this complex insect, beyond their great tasting honey, the more fascinated you will become” says Koopman

The class will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the office for ISU Extension and Outreach-Jasper County, 550 N. Second Ave. W, Newton.
